Alliance Française Palmerston North is a well-known French language and cultural centre located on the first floor of the Square Edge Creative Centre. It is one of the oldest cultural organisations, established in Palmerston North under the name of ‘Cercle Français’ in 1949. 

Alliance Française is a NZ registered charity which actively promotes interest in French language and culture. Our mission is to encourage the study of French language; to raise awareness of French and French-speaking cultures in all their dimensions; to foster cultural, intellectual, artistic and friendly exchanges between  French-speaking world and local communities; and to promote cultural diversity by highlighting all cultures.

Alliance Française offers and supports continued learning both in and out of the classroom by offering French courses for all ages and levels, cultural events, a French community library and official language diplomas.

Alliance Française supports refugees and migrants from different backgrounds and cultures, in particular French-speaking, by providing literacy and numeracy classes, as well as English classes. We facilitate social interaction and mutual exchanges with the local community.

Alliance Française also supports teachers in schools by offering competitions, workshops, professional development, and exams.

Established in 1981, Rose City Quilters is all about sharing our passion for quilting, patchwork and textile art.  Our meetings are a great opportunity to listen to talented  speakers, see inspirational show and tells and to meet other quilters. Tote and Gloat is a one day annual event in early May each year. Quilters from all over  participate in a huge  show and tell, view challenges , listen to a speaker and get to shop in a merchant mall. Every two years in October we have an exhibition, Celebration of Quilts which showcases our members’ quilts.

Our group was founded in 1947 and is affiliated with the New Zealand Rose Society (Inc). Our motto is to implant the roses in the hearts and gardens of the people of New Zealand. We do this by sharing information and knowledge on how to grow good roses in the Manawatū region. This is done through our newsletter and other publications, meetings with guest speakers and demonstrations and visits to gardens and other places of interest. Members also have a wide range of other garden interests besides roses so they are also incorporated into our events.

We are a group of non-professional keyboard and organ players (mostly retired) ranging from experienced to beginner players and some non-players that come along to just enjoy the music. We meet every Monday at 1.00pm at the. Manchester Unity Hall, 26 Walding Street, and finish at approximately 3.30pm. Visitors are welcome and are only asked to pay the $2 door charge that covers the hall hire and afternoon tea expenses. The club owns an organ, piano and an electronic keyboard as well some members bring along their own keyboards and piano accordions. We hope that after visiting us a few times and getting to know the friendly and easy-going members of our club you too would become a member.

Environment Network Manawatū is the environmental hub for our region, underpinning and supporting 60 plus member groups.  ENM coordinates two collectives:
•	Manawatū Food Action Network (MFAN) bringing social service and environmental organisations together to improve equitable access to healthy food.  MFAN is currently implementing the 4412 Kai Resilience Project. 
•	Manawatū River Source to Sea (S2S) supporting membership collaboration and collective action to enhance biodiversity throughout the Manawatū River catchment.  S2S’s projects are the Plastic Pollution Challenge, Ruahine Kiwi and Palmerston North Repair Cafe

We’re a group of people who enjoy all types of cycling and our aim is to help you add to your enjoyment of cycling too – be that for sport, recreation, commuting, health or even a way of helping the environment by cycling more and using the car less.

Back in 2016, local cycling enthusiasts headed by Steve Stannard, decided it would be a good idea to have an international professional cycling event in the Manawatū North Island region of New Zealand. That first event was called, the “Gravel and Tar” and quickly gained a national and international reputation for its challenging parcours amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Manawatū.

Although not unique, there are very few international road cycling events that combine smooth road surfaces with stretches of other surfaces such as gravel, or in the case of the world famous Paris-Roubaix in France, cobbles. Colloquially, the Gravel and Tar has become known as the “Paris-Roubaix of the South”.

In 2019, a race for women, “The Gravel and Tar La Femme” was introduced, which in 2020 became one of the first cycling events in the world to pay equal prize money with the men’s event.

Seeing the increasing interest in competitive cycling for amateurs, the Slicks and Stones was then introduced to feature various distances and e-bike categories to encourage more people to participate.

And in 2019, the organising committee for these two events morphed into the Greasy Chain Charitable Trust with the goal of “Encouraging all New Zealanders to become healthier through regular cycling.”

Join us for our live performances each month in the Evelyn Rawlins Room at Square Edge. Enjoy the sounds of many eras and styles performed by local pianists, instrumentalists, singers, soloists and ensembles. All are welcome. 

In addition, Musica Viva offers a Young Performers’ Scholarship competition for local musicians under 30 years. Prizes are offered in Piano, Instrumental and Vocal categories. Participants perform an item in our May–September concerts, with the competition taking place in October. Applications to participate in the YPS programme closed on March 14 2024.
This year, 2025, Musica Viva celebrates 100 years of classical-style community music in the Manawatu. The big celebration is on April 5 and includes an extended concert, book launch, an inaugural competition, afternoon tea, dinner and much more. At Pathways Presbyterian Church at St Andrew's at 1pm, concert from 2pm. Concert entry $20, school students $5.

A support group for people affected  by   Parkinson's Disease,  Parkinsonism and related conditions, their carers, family and friends.   Providing education, referral networks, and opportunities for social activities and exercise classes.
There are a variety of exercise groups tailored specially to suit all levels of ability  (details from secretary).

The Lavender Society is an 18+ club for LGBTQ+ adults and their allies to meet new people and hopefully make new friends. The activities vary depending on numbers and the interest of the group.

We are a women's choir who sing a wide range of music from Renaissance to Pop. We were established in 1997 by Alison Stewart. We sing at the Palmerston North and Feilding libraries and have sung Christmas carols occasionally in the Downtown complex. One of our purposes is to raise money for charity.

We meet monthly and all are welcome at our meetings. At our meetings we often have talks by experienced genealogists and our many research resources are available (databases and library). Formed in 1996, the Manawatunes are a chorus of men who love singing. We sing acapella harmony, much in the barbershop style, but we also explore a range of other acapella music. We try to have a variety of music in our repertoire; from classic “Polecats” (cornerstones of the Barbershop genre) to arrangements of more contemporary numbers. We were the Barbershop Harmony New Zealand Champion Small Chorus in 2019, 2018, 2014, 2010 and 1999 and hopefully there will be further exciting news coming from our partnership with BHNZ in 2021. The Manawatunes meet to rehearse each Wednesday evening at the Red Cross rooms, and are delighted to have this opportunity to share our harmony with the public after a year where a number of our opportunities have dried up. We hope you will enjoy our performance, as well as the performance of one of our quartets, Sound Check!

Menzshed Manawatu was formed in 2011. It exists primarily for retired men to share their experiences and skills while working on a variety of projects – at this stage mainly woodworking. While men are welcome to work on projects for themselves, a lot of the satisfaction comes from being part of community projects – often  providing something  to assist another community group to carry out their work.

At the heart of the Menzshed philosophy is men’s health and welfare, and the Shed gives them a “happy place”. Although access to tools may be a drawcard, companionship is what keeps members attending. The Shed reminds men that they are not alone, and that although their days of paid employment may be over, there can still be reasons to get out of bed in the morning, and have fun and fellowship at the same time.

The Manawatu Overtones is a Women’s Chorus who sing a cappella, four-part harmony in the barbershop style.  Our chorus was first formed in 2004 and currently has approximately 35 members.  We are an auditioned chorus and members, although not required to read music, must be able to sing holding their part (whether it be Lead, Baritone, Tenor or Bass) while other parts may be singing around them.

Leads sing the melody, Baritones provide the fill-in notes and round out the harmony, Tenors have a light, sweet, pure tone to their voice and sing the highest part while basses have the lowest voices and  provide the foundation for the harmony.

The Awapuni Garden Club was started in 1978 and today is well supported with 100 members. The club is a friendly group of people who like to share garden knowledge and are keen to learn more about plants, seeds, gardening etc. At the monthly meetings we have a guest speaker, a sales table, a raffle and a home grown vegetables, fruit and flower competition.

Fitzherbert Rebus Club welcomes retired and semi-retired people of all ages and from all walks of life, who are interested in coming together socially for friendship, fun, talks, guest speakers and leisure activities.

Founded in August 1997, the Club has about 60 members and is affiliated to Rebus NZ Inc.

We meet together monthly, with other regular activities and outings scheduled, which members participate in according to their interests.

F&B Manawatū Branch gives monthly talks on a variety of conservation and environmental topics, by speakers who have a knowledge of the topic. We also try to run a monthly trip to places of interest and if possible relating to the topic of the monthly talk. 
Forest & Bird has over 90 years’ experience in campaigning and restoring New Zealand’s native environment. Over that time, we have been an informed and passionate defender of New Zealand’s natural environment.  New Zealander’s know what they are getting when they hear from Forest & Bird – they know that we are on the side of the environment; they know that we are science-based and they know that we are independent.

OnStage Manawatū’s objective is the promotion of the performing arts in Palmerston North and surrounds and to assist community and charitable causes. Club groups perform at retirement villages around the city. The club also awards a $500 scholarship annually to a young artist. Until March 2020 the club was known as the Manawatū Savage Club, established in 1908. The name change was the first step in modernising and simplifying the club’s customs and formats.

PNTMC was formed in December 1965 by a group of enthusiastic trampers and mountaineers, with its first trip to Field Hut in the Tararuas on the 6th February 1966. Since then the Club has grown and currently has around 70 members.

Our aims include organising tramping and/or climbing trips each weekend, fostering the interaction of people with a common enthusiasm for the outdoors and facilitating members to develop skills necessary for safe and self-sufficient travel in forest and alpine environments. For many years, the Club had a hut (Rangi Hut) situated just above the bush line on the western side of the Ruahine Ranges. The current hut is now owned and managed by the Department of Conservation. A display board in this hut records PNTMC’s association with the area. In 2012 the club entered into a management agreement with DOC to provide support and strategic advice regarding Rangi Hut and to take over maintenance of Ngamoko and Mid-Pohangina Huts, in the Ruahine Forest Park.

The Club is an affiliated member of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC) as we believe it is important to have an effective lobby group acting on behalf of our members at a national level.

We have existed for 80 years, and during that time, our actions have helped shape the social and economic fabric of what the Manawatu is today. Our focus at present is on realising the vision of a gender-equal New Zealand.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:
To present choral music of excellence to the citizens of the Manawatu. Founded in 1919, the Palmerston North Choral Society is an assessed choir in Palmerston North. They perform a range of classic choral singing to more modern works and perform at various venues and events around the city.

The choir performs a range of choral music from traditional oratorios through to modern works. Generally, two concerts each year are its main focus but this year it is aiming for four shorter concerts. The singers also enjoy participating in NZ Choral Federation Sing Fests, the Molly Atkinson Ladies' Choral Festival, the city Christmas in the Park concert and other community events as they arise. The PN Choral Society celebrated their 100th year in 2019.

Sing Ong Tai Chi is an international organisation dedicated to the study and quality tuition of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, headed by Professor Yek Sing Ong (now based in Auckland).
