F&B Manawatū Branch gives monthly talks on a variety of conservation and environmental topics, by speakers who have a knowledge of the topic. We also try to run a monthly trip to places of interest and if possible relating to the topic of the monthly talk.

Mah Jong is a tile-based Chinese game that has become popular around the world. In groups of four, players aim to go Mah Jong by being first to complete a special ‘hand’ with their tiles. It combines skill and luck to create a game that is fun and stimulating for the brain, in a friendly social setting.

Established in 2011, Hokowhitu Village Centre (HVC) is nestled in the heart of Hokowhitu Village at 356 Albert Street. We are an independent community group of volunteers, working together to foster friendship and to strengthen our community.  You can come along and chat with one of our Volunteers who work in pairs for two-hour shifts, or join one of our activities.

We have an excellent library of good quality donated books, jigsaws, DVDs and children’s books available for anyone to borrow. Excess stock is sold to supplement funds for running the Centre ($3 per book or 2 for $5). Check out our book trolley daily, or visit on the 3rd Sunday of the month during the market.

The Manawatū Standard is provided daily. Justice of the Peace services are available each Thursday 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. We have a monthly afternoon tea on the 3rd Tuesday, and various groups, such as knit and natter and games two weekly, and handcrafts, book group, greeting card workshop, friendship group and men's group monthly. HVC is responsible for Hokowhitu Hidden Books, hiding children's books in playgrounds and parks for them to discover.  Children can keep the book, or re-hide it for someone else to find. Palmerston North Marist Football was established in 1988. Since then, the football club has grown into a club with a strong backbone consisting of more than 50 teams over Senior and Junior age range.

We have teams placed at all levels of the game. 
Football is split between Senior (16+) and Junior (4-14).

We are a group of non-professional keyboard and organ players (mostly retired) ranging from experienced to beginner players and some non-players that come along to just enjoy the music. We meet every Monday at 1.00pm at the. Manchester Unity Hall, 26 Walding Street, and finish at approximately 3.30pm. Visitors are welcome and are only asked to pay the $2 door charge that covers the hall hire and afternoon tea expenses. The club owns an organ, piano and an electronic keyboard as well some members bring along their own keyboards and piano accordions. We hope that after visiting us a few times and getting to know the friendly and easy-going members of our club you too would become a member.

Traditional English Dance - Morris Dancing

Every solstice, outside the pubs of Palmerston North, strangely clad people can be seen leaping into the air, waving handkerchiefs and sticks, with bells jingling from their shins. This traditional ritual to welcome the return of the sun and spring is called Morris dancing, and it goes back at least to the 15th century in England. 

The origins of Morris dancing have been lost in history, but prevalent opinion is that Morris is based pre-Christian fertility or luck-bringing ceremonies. Over time, these 'pagan' dances were assimilated by the church (first the Catholic, then the Protestant) and by the 1500s, Morris was being performed for Easter, May Day and other local festivals.

Morris is still danced all year round to ensure a good crop, to provide entertainment, or to commemorate important events. Today, Morris is still performed in England and New Zealand on days such as Plough Monday, Easter, and the start of spring. Some of the dances have not changed in over a hundred years and because of this long history, Morris dancing is considered a living tradition.

We would love you to try Morris dancing. We practise at Palmerston North Fire Station on Thursday evenings.

We’re a group of people who enjoy all types of cycling and our aim is to help you add to your enjoyment of cycling too – be that for sport, recreation, commuting, health or even a way of helping the environment by cycling more and using the car less.

Back in 2016, local cycling enthusiasts headed by Steve Stannard, decided it would be a good idea to have an international professional cycling event in the Manawatū North Island region of New Zealand. That first event was called, the “Gravel and Tar” and quickly gained a national and international reputation for its challenging parcours amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Manawatū.

Although not unique, there are very few international road cycling events that combine smooth road surfaces with stretches of other surfaces such as gravel, or in the case of the world famous Paris-Roubaix in France, cobbles. Colloquially, the Gravel and Tar has become known as the “Paris-Roubaix of the South”.

In 2019, a race for women, “The Gravel and Tar La Femme” was introduced, which in 2020 became one of the first cycling events in the world to pay equal prize money with the men’s event.

Seeing the increasing interest in competitive cycling for amateurs, the Slicks and Stones was then introduced to feature various distances and e-bike categories to encourage more people to participate.

And in 2019, the organising committee for these two events morphed into the Greasy Chain Charitable Trust with the goal of “Encouraging all New Zealanders to become healthier through regular cycling.”

The Lavender Society is an 18+ club for LGBTQ+ adults and their allies to meet new people and hopefully make new friends. The activities vary depending on numbers and the interest of the group.

Marist Marist Netball, as it is now known, has been a force in the Manawatu Netball scene for over half a century. Originally called St. Joseph's Old Girls (coached by Betty Steffenson) and later named Convent Old Girls, it became Marist in 1987. However, the club's players continue to wear the traditional black and white colours that are symbolic of the catholic Sisters of Mercy Order. This Order made a huge contribution to both primary and secondary education in New Zealand including Palmerston North from the 1920's until 1987 when the last nun (Sr Clare Vaughan) was farewelled at St Peter's College. The Sisters passed on their love of netball to all the girls in their charge and thus created a foundation for Marist Netball and kindred clubs throughout the country. 

Probably the best years of Marist Netball were in the 80’s when the club had a dozen or more teams playing each season. However as was the trend of the times, when other sports became popular, the number of teams dropped away. However, we currently field 12 teams from Premier grades through to Social.

Scottish country dancing is a social form of dance with its roots in the communal rural dances of Britain.  

Unlike Highland dancing, Scottish country is in groups of six to eight people, is much more relaxed, there are no bagpipes, and kilts are definitely not required.  All you need are soft-soled shoes, the ability to count to eight, and time to come along to have fun accompanied by lively Celtic music.  

No partner is required, but you can certainly bring a friend if you wish!  

Beginners are always welcome – tuition is given.

The Manawatu Overtones is a Women’s Chorus who sing a cappella, four-part harmony in the barbershop style.  Our chorus was first formed in 2004 and currently has approximately 35 members.  We are an auditioned chorus and members, although not required to read music, must be able to sing holding their part (whether it be Lead, Baritone, Tenor or Bass) while other parts may be singing around them.

Leads sing the melody, Baritones provide the fill-in notes and round out the harmony, Tenors have a light, sweet, pure tone to their voice and sing the highest part while basses have the lowest voices and  provide the foundation for the harmony.

The Renaissance Singers, formed in 1975, is an auditioned choir of 20-30 members who frequently perform a cappella. The choir has a reputation for presenting varied and challenging programmes, comprising modern works as well as works of the Renaissance period and earlier. 2-3 concerts are presented each year. Fitzherbert Rebus Club welcomes retired and semi-retired people of all ages and from all walks of life, who are interested in coming together socially for friendship, fun, talks, guest speakers and leisure activities.

Founded in August 1997, the Club has about 60 members and is affiliated to Rebus NZ Inc.

We meet together monthly, with other regular activities and outings scheduled, which members participate in according to their interests.

Our meeting format usually involves announcements, a cameo speaker, morning tea and a guest speaker.

The Inner Smile Tai Chi Club is a not-for-profit community organisation dedicated to the teaching and practice of Tai Chi.  We were formed in 1999 as an adjunct of the Palmerston North RSA and in 2012 moved to the Senior Citizens Hall in Main Street. Our intent is to provide a community focus for the health and well-being benefits derived from Tai Chi and to develop, foster, and promote the practice of Tai Chi within Palmerston North. We conduct Tai Chi sessions/training and provide a social and friendly environment for the members of the Inner Smile Tai Chi Club. We organise and provide social events which are generally subsidised by the Club.

We play the card game bridge! Our Club has about 75
members, and we meet twice weekly to play bridge. Our players range in age and bridge experience, from very new players to very experienced players. 

Our Club started in 1992, and we are affiliated to the national body, NZ Bridge. We are currently based at the Palmerston North Bridge  Club. Our Club is managed by a voluntary Board of Directors.

PNTMC was formed in December 1965 by a group of enthusiastic trampers and mountaineers, with its first trip to Field Hut in the Tararuas on the 6th February 1966. Since then the Club has grown and currently has around 70 members.

Our aims include organising tramping and/or climbing trips each weekend, fostering the interaction of people with a common enthusiasm for the outdoors and facilitating members to develop skills necessary for safe and self-sufficient travel in forest and alpine environments. For many years, the Club had a hut (Rangi Hut) situated just above the bush line on the western side of the Ruahine Ranges. The current hut is now owned and managed by the Department of Conservation. A display board in this hut records PNTMC’s association with the area. In 2012 the club entered into a management agreement with DOC to provide support and strategic advice regarding Rangi Hut and to take over maintenance of Ngamoko and Mid-Pohangina Huts, in the Ruahine Forest Park.

The Club is an affiliated member of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of New Zealand (FMC) as we believe it is important to have an effective lobby group acting on behalf of our members at a national level.
